As a photographer, I tend to shoot a lot of first-timers. Many of them feel pretty nervous stepping in front of the camera. Being camera shy can really have you overthinking. What if I look ridiculous? Maybe I should lose some weight first? What poses should I do? Trust me, I’ve been in your shoes before! Being only human, I feel nervous now and again when I switch between being the photographer and the subject. Sometimes I even feel anxious when shooting. In this post, I’ll talk you through tricks to use to feel at ease during your photo session. Implementing these tips will help you overcome your fear of being in front of the camera.
1. Choose the right photographer
The first step to feeling comfortable during your photo session is choosing the right photographer. Look for someone whose style you admire and who makes you feel at ease. Schedule a casual meet-up or chat via email to get to know them a bit before your session. This can make a big difference when it’s time to get in front of the camera. A photographer who understands your vision and can make you laugh is invaluable in helping you relax and enjoy the process.
2. Plan ahead of time
Relaxing your mind after booking a photo session is as easy as planning ahead well ahead of the date of the session itself. Planning the session will ensure every detail of the shoot is taken care of. Planning your outfit, rehearsing hair and makeup among other tips ahead of time will allow you to worry less on the big day itself. Read “How to Prepare for Your Perfect Photo Session” for more tips.
3. Create a mood board
One of my favorite apps to use when planning a photoshoot is Pinterest. I basically use it to gather inspiration and would advise you to do so as well. Look up sessions similar to the one you are going to have, and pin anything you like to your board. Don’t forget to share your mood board with your photographer, that will help you both get on the same page.
4. Get in a positive mindset
Your mood on the day of the shoot matters more than you think – it will reflect in the final photos. I know you might be stressing over the fact that you are totally new to this and that is totally normal. A good way to set the mood right, and rid yourself of the anxiety you might be feeling, is to do something fun or something you totally enjoy.
By fun, I don’t mean pull an all-nighter drinking and partying prior to the shoot – you won’t wear that look well the next morning. I would however advise going for a stroll on one of Seychelles’ beaches to clear your head. Listening to some of your favorite music – you know, the ones that always have you singing along without fail – when getting ready for and on the way to the shoot. This will definitely lift your mood. If everything else fails, think about why you are having this session. In most cases, that is to celebrate you, or a milestone in your life. Play out in your head the reactions you will get when others see how amazing the photos turned out.
5. Wear something comfortable
Another confidence booster, and way to feel at ease during your photo session, lies in the clothes that you wear. First and foremost, make sure that it is a piece that you feel comfortable in. It should also be one that flatters your body and the theme of the shoot. Don’t be afraid to dress up in formal clothes, especially for engagement sessions. It will definitely make the photo scream ‘special’.
6. Focus on having fun
Try to focus on enjoying the experience rather than worrying about the outcome. Think of the photo session as a fun activity rather than a formal event. Laugh, move around, and let your personality shine through. When you’re having fun, it shows in your photos. Moving around during your session is also welcomed and encouraged. From moving between poses to flipping your dress around, movement will free up the nervous energy that you have within. Not only that but it will also result in vibrant and dynamic photos. So don’t shy out on me, the end result will have you smiling.
7. Bring Props
Sometimes, one of the challenges a client faces during a session is what to do with their hands. A few solutions would be to run your hand through your hair, put them in your pockets or use them to flatter your body. If you are alone at your shoot and you do not have someone to hold hands with, another solution would be to introduce props. Let your imagination run wild here – your prop can be a fabulous beach bag or hat, a bottle or glass of champaign, a book or magazine. Even your sandals can come in handy! Keeping your hands busy leaves you worrying less about them. Plus, they add to the general look of the photo. Just remember to make sure the prop goes with the theme of the shoot.
To wrap up, its a good idea to trust the process. Remember, your photographer is there to make you look your best. Trust their expertise and let them guide you through the session. Relax, take deep breaths, and trust that you’re in good hands. The more relaxed you are, the better the photos will turn out.
Feeling at ease during your photo session is all about preparation, communication, and enjoying the moment. By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to a fun and stress-free experience that results in beautiful, authentic photos.
