How to Prepare for Your Perfect Photo Session

Whoop whoop! You’ve successfully booked a photo session with your favourite photographer and you are all excited, and looking forward to the date of the shoot. The one major concern on your mind at the moment is that you aren’t too sure how to prep for the session. Arriving at the session prepared will not only ease your mind during the session, but it will also reflect in the final images that your photographer sends out to you. Let’s run through how to prepare for your perfect photo session.

Plan your outfit

The clothes you wear on the day of the photoshoot will make a huge difference in bringing up the level of the overall look of the image. Moreover, the right clothes will help tell the story of your shoot. I would recommend you go with a solid color. Not that patterned clothes aren’t beautiful, but wearing a solid color will help put more focus on you and avoid distractions in the final photo. A darker color will make you appear slenderer on camera, whereas a vibrant one will create a pop and draw attention.

Most importantly, wear something that will boost your confidence  and that you are comfortable in ‑ it will certainly not go unnoticed in the photo. Unless it is your wedding day, if you are not too sure about what to wear ‑ you can always get in touch with me and we can get through this together.

Rehearse hair and makeup

After having decided what you are going to wear, it’s time to play around with hair and makeup. Do you plan to style your hair in a certain way or wear makeup on the day of your photoshoot? Regardless if you are going to do it yourself or have it done professionally, give them a test run.

By doing this, you will without a doubt know if both came out as you want. It gives you time to play around, and make changes where need be. Practicing will also allow you to be more relaxed and confident during your photoshoot as you won’t be worried about how your face and hair look on the day itself.

Gather props, clothes and accessories

If you are using props and accessories, or having a change of clothes, (I really do hope you are bringing some) make sure to assemble them one or two days before the shoot. You wouldn’t want to be late for your shoot because you couldn’t find your beach hat!

One more thing, make sure you iron out any wrinkles out of your clothes, props and accessories – you do not want to look unkempt in the final images, do you? Don’t forget to pack them in a way that will keep these pesky wrinkles out too when preparing for your perfect photo session.

Grab some necessities

Bringing these extra items to the shoot will help greatly. A small pocket‑sized mirror will be handy to check on your hair and makeup. Talking about makeup, bring some along for touch up if you don’t have a makeup artist on site. Oh, and a comb to catch stray hair, that will work wonders.

A small towel is super helpful to wipe away any sweat. Depending on the length of the shoot, you might consider bringing snacks as well, but definitely grab a bottle of water – the humid weather and hot sun will have you feeling thirsty.

Grooming

You would want to avoid redness that may come from irritated skin, so shaving the day or night before the shoot will help you avoid this problem. Please don’t do it on the day itself. The day before the shoot is also a good time to get your mani‑pedi done.

Don’t try any new facial products or hair color or haircut just a few days before the shoot. If you don’t like it or have a reaction to the product, you won’t have enough time to fix it. Try avoiding sunburn or weird tan lines before your shoot as well.

Feed and recharge your body

As much as a photoshoot is fun, it can also be exhausting, especially when shooting outside under the sun in Seychelles. To prepare for your perfect photo session, make sure to eat something, drink plenty of water and get plenty of rest before the session. Just don’t go for something too heavy that will cause bloating.

The health of your skin and the amount of rest you got the previous night will show on photos. It is also a good thing to sip water during the shoot to remain hydrated.
